Do we need to use italics in when we let a character speak in a novel?

Using italics

I'm not 100% sure of what you mean.

If you are asking if all conversation should be in italics, the answer would be no.

If you are asking if you would put italics within dialog, the answer is yes. For example, you would write:

Mr. Harvey said, "Please take out your copy of the alphabet book Amazing British Columbia and turn to your favorite entry."
