Craft of Writing

Who should study the craft of writing?

Writers, that's who!

No matter how much experience you have in writing and publishing, you can improve your writing.
Just as a musician studies musical theory and a woodworker studies both wood and tools, writers study ways to improve their craft.

In order to follow or to bend the rules, the writer must first know what those rules are. Some of the rules deal with grammar. Other rules outline style.

How well do you know the genre you will write? Each sort of book is written differently. Flip open a dictionary, a novel, and a cookbook. The differences leap off the page. More subtle differences define a romance, science-fiction, and mystery...

...or instruction manuals, field guides, and academic papers.

Writing for children presents special challenges.

The pages you will link to from here will help you to hone the craft of writing. If you can't find information on a specific topic, first use the search box under the navigation bar. If that does not yield results, use the form below to ask for information.

The general writing tips apply to any writing. Be sure to begin here.

Some problems crop up for my clients over and over again. I collect those mistakes and the explanations of how to fix them on a writing style guide page. Do you have any of these problems? This is also the place you can ask your own specific question.

Can your readers understand your writing? Readability gives one measure that may indicate how easily your ideas will come across.
