1.Special days for writers
Today is December 29. It is also Tick Tock Day (the day to pay attention to the passage of time and to tie up loose ends before the new year), YMCA Day, National Chocolate Day, and perhaps other celebrations. (My first niece was born on December 29th.)

Knowing common and not-so-common special days opens doors to writers.

Add a special day to your plot. For writers, a special day is like a dress-up box in a playroom: limited only by your imagination. Who would celebrate the day? How? Why? With whom? You enrich your plot, and your readers enjoy their new knowledge.

You do not have to include a special day in your plot to make use of it. Savvy promoters see ties between special days and their products. Savvy writers see ties between special days and their books and use those days to write press releases or set up themed book signings or make connections with potential publishers. Again, only your imagination limits what you can do with a special day.

As the New Year approaches, look at a calendar or the Interesting Web site below to see if there are special days you can use as a writer.

2.Tickled my funny bone
Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why we call it the present.

3. Interesting Web site
Here’s a list of special days celebrated annually. How will you use this list?

4. Writing prompt
Read this origin of Festivus, https://news.yahoo.com/festivus-apos-seinfeld-apos-actually-185909933.html, an invented holiday on the sitcom Seinfeld — it’s not what you think you know — then invent your own special day, and write about it. I’d love to see your results. Who knows, one day your special day may have its own Web site and a world of followers.
