Hello,

We must walk consciously only part way toward our goal,
and then leap in the dark to our success.

1. Invest in a writers’ conference
There are writers’ conferences all over the world, so chances are there will be one within striking distance of you within the year. Let me tempt you now so you’ll start planning right away.

When you invest in a writers’ conference, you get those you meet, what you do, and the cherry on top.

Attendees routinely claim that the networking possibilities at a conference are worth the cost without any of the scheduled activities. Imagine a setting just for writers, one where editors, agents, publishers, illustrators, printers, and designers participate to make contact with you, their potential client. Many conferences allow for meet and greets where you can make an appointment to pitch your book or just ask questions. Priceless.

Besides the options to meet one-on-one with industry professionals, writers’ conferences have lectures, panel discussions, workshops, seminars, and social events. Most don’t have all of the above, but most have some combination of them. These events are often the draw that persuades writers to part with actual cash to attend, which brings me to the cherry on top…

…If you write with the intention of publishing, it is probable that the costs involved in attending the conference are tax deductible. Check in your own jurisdiction, but it’s most likely that besides the registration costs, you can also claim travel and food and lodging.

There are general writers’ conferences, regional writers’ conferences, genre conferences, and conferences for new writers, seniors, writers of religious material, and writers of school texts. And this is only a partial list. Pour yourself your favourite beverage, and do an Internet search for writers’ conferences in your area. Then dream big.

2.Tickled my funny bone
Notice at a conference: For anyone who has children and doesn't know it, there is a daycare on the 1st floor.

4. Writing prompt
School is back in session in most places. Write one of your school memories to share with a young relative. Make it as interesting as you can. (Share it with me, too, if you like. I love seeing what writers are doing with the prompts.)
