Understanding structure

by Newton Kirkby
(Liverpool, England)

Analyse the work of the professionals.

I find the best way to understand the structure of a good book is to deconstruct it in detail, create character profiles, observe peaks and troughs in the story. Go through chapter by chapter, scene by scene and observe how the plot is unfolded and relationships/conflicts develop.
The additional benefit is that you'll see the flaws and realise that even the big names are far from perfect.
