Shelley Harrison Rae
Self-Publishing Poetry

Shelly Harrison RaeIf self-publishing is like taking the stairs to the top of the Empire State Building, and self-publishing fiction is like crossing the Sahara desert on foot, then self-publishing poetry is like scaling Everest. So why would Shelley Harrison Rae choose to self-publish poetry?

Shelley has been teaching writing here on the Sunshine Coast, at the Rancho La Puerta Spa in Tecate, Mexico, and at the Surrey Writers' Conference. She thought that if she had her own book published, it could serve as a take-home companion from her workshops.

Shelley was not prepared to wait the six years she thought it would take to go through the submission process with a traditional publisher. She decided to put together her poems and self-publish them right away, and Life Leaves Stains was born.

Shelley has been happy with the result. The book does give her credibility as a published writer. She can sell it when she gives workshops or classes.

Shelley believes in both traditional and self-publishing, and she believes in creating a quality product. She has done that with her first chapbook, which shows her writing students what her work looks like in print.
