Mar 21, 2007, Chinese Writer Jailed for Opinions

Zhang Jianhjong, who writes under the pen name Li Hong, was sentenced to 6 years in prison in Ningbo, China on March 19, 2007 for "incitement to subvert the state's authority."

The Committee to Protect Journalists is calling for his immediate release. With the Olympics set for Bejing in 2008, China will come under increasing scrutiny with regard to human rights.

While our concerns hover around the economics of our writing or the art of writing, we do well to remember that some writers pay dearly for speaking out on vital issues.

James Patterson, who has sold 12 million books, established the Page Turner Awards to support those who encourage literacy. The awards total $500,000 and will be shared among a large variety of people and programs.
