Free money for writers A grant is the best free money going for writers. Getting the grant takes good planning and writing skills. First the planning. List all the aspects of your writing with time lines and costs. List all the marketing information you have. Outline your book if you haven't already done so. Evaluate your book's importance. (It should be important if you want someone to buy it.) Update your writer's bio. Next the writing. You need to know not only how to introduce your writing project in a compelling way, but also how to present that project to the heart of the person or organization offering the grant. Some granting agencies require an application form. Others may accept more free-flowing prose. Agencies give clues about what they are looking for. Use the information you gathered in the planning stage as a lens to examine every nuance you notice in what and how the grant offer is worded. Marry the aims of the agency with your needs. Write tight and to to the point. Include only those items from your planning step that apply to a particular grant. Of course, you need to include details of how you will spend the money to further your project. You may not get full funding from one grant. It's OK to apply for one grant to travel to an important destination and another grant to market your book. Keep track of grant applications.
